Shard

Bike commute.

Lycra on.

Bag packed.

Double up on socks. Chilly out there.

Shoes on. Velcro like a toddler. Unwanted ventilation in stiff plastic soles. Too poor for carbon.

Bike out.

Check tyres.

Helmet. Gloves. Lights on.

Spin spin spin spin.

Breathe breathe breathe breathe.

Sweat sweat sweat sweat.

Wet tarmac shines under blue white LEDs.

Road goes up a bit. Road goes down a bit. Cars come past. Cars hit traffic. I pass cars.

“Glad I’m on the bike, not sat in all that traffic”

Glimmer on the rain soaked carriageway.

Shard.

Right where my wheel is headed. Too late to avoid.

PSSSHHT.

Flat tyre. Karma? I did just laugh at all those drivers…

Now they return the favour, smirking as I wrestle with tyre levers. Inner tubes. Tiny, low volume double shot pump.

Check tyres.

Spin spin spin spin.

Breathe breathe breathe breathe.

Sweat sweat sweat sweat.

Still quicker than taking the bus.
